I have used sbopkg 0.36 successfully with Slackware 13.37. However,
I've noticed a problem running it with Slackware 14.0. I looked in the
latest archives of this mailing list (which end at December) and found
no mention of what seems to me to be an obvious difference.
Many of the README files for the few packages I've tried to install no
longer have the dependencies listed in them. This is true for Midori
and GnuCash. The list of dependencies, and the order in which to build
and install them, is critical for getting GnuCash to work.
I must admit, I did not install Slackware on this PC. It was given to
me by a friend with Slackware 14.0 already installed on it, and I
tweaked it to suit me. I have been running Slackware for years, though,
so I'm very familiar with it. The only thing I noticed that isn't
installed is the KDE packages, but I don't know why those would affect
sbopkg, which I run from the command-line.
Has anyone else noticed this problem? Was removing the mention of
dependencies a deliberate decision by the sbopkg developers?--
Chick

Clearly, the mailing list has been quiet because there are ZERO bugs in
sbopkg. ;-)

Actually, this is a SlackBuilds.org thing, not sbopkg. Several months
ago, the decision was made by the SBo admins to add a 'REQUIRES=' line
to the *.info file and list the required dependencies there. Once that
happened, this information was removed from the README in the
SlackBuilds.org repository. If you go to the SBo website and check
the README's you'll see the dependency information is not there.
A commit was made to the sbopkg subversion repository last October that
restored this functionality to sbopkg -- meaning, it parsed the
REQUIRES= line and listed the dependencies in sbopkg when the user
viewed the README. This may be undergoing some tweaking soon but I
think the essential functionality will remain. So if you want to pull
from sbopkg's SVN you can have this feature now.
Also, there is a new sbopkg helper script in the works that should be
released soon that will allow a user to create sbopkg queuefiles with
dependencies listed in the right order. Stay tuned.
HTH.

This wasn't a decision by sbopkg devs at all but a change in SBo policy
and adapting to it fell between the cracks of the last release. It's
handled in the development version of sbopkg - if you use sspm
http://sbopkg.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/tools/sspm
you can easily upgrade to it if you want - the dev version is otherwise
currently completely identical to the released version and safe to use.
I think the SBo admins decided to generally alphabetize the dep list
though (midori and many others are - gnucash isn't), so there's nothing
to be done about that.

That sounds like a recipe for catastrophe. um... "Let's just try to
compile and install the deps in alphabetical order instead of the order
they may necessarily need to be compiled and installed?" Huh?
I see Chess offered some assurance that if this is the case, it might be
fixed soon in his post that followed yours:
"Also, there is a new sbopkg helper script in the works that should be

I'm thinking "Don't touch that dial". I will certainly stay tuned to

First,my apologies for gatecrashing;if, in fact, this is what I'm
doing?
I'm trying to install Gnucash from Sbopkg;all seems to go well until
almost the last line when I get a fault message:-
"'/usr/lib/libgnome-keyring.1a' not found" with the offer to proceed
with the usual accompanying warning about future dependency.
Linux Questions couldn't help and I couldn't find anything
like it in Slackbuilds.
Can the experts throw any light in this direction? I'd be
grateful.

How familiar are you with building packages from SlackBuilds.org?
Sbopkg is a 'front-end' to SlackBuilds.org so you should be familiar
with how those scripts are used before using sbopkg. This mentioned at
the very top of the Instructions section of this sbopkg(8) man page.
SlackBuilds.org and sbopkg do not figure out all the dependencies for
you. The SlackBuild script lists some of the required dependencies in
the REQUIRES= line in the .info file, but you need to then figure out
the dependencies of each of those and put them in the right order in
order to successfully build a particular package.
However, sbopkg also has the ability to load and save queuefiles, which
are simple text files listing dependencies in the right order. You can
load up the queuefile and then start the build.
There is a user-contributed git repo of sbopkg queuefiles that have the
dependencies listed in the right order:
http://gitorious.org/sbopkg-slackware-queues
We are also in the process of releasing an sbopkg helper script that
will create queuefiles for you with all the recursively-listed
dependencies for a particlar package. We're still testing it but look
for it to land in the sbopkg subversion repository soon. I'm sure we'll
announce something here on the list as well.
In the meantime, here is the list of deps in build order for gnucash
that this script just came up with on my system. Please compare it to
your own list of dependencies and let me know how it matches up.
goffice
libgnomecanvas
ORBit2
libbonobo
gnome-mime-data
gnome-vfs
libgnome
libbonoboui
libgnomeui
libgnomecups
libgnomeprint
libgnomeprintui
gtkhtml
libofx
slib
gnucash
Hope this helps.

And thank you too Chess! :)
I just shared this announcement with the G+ Slackware community, so
hopefully you'll see a slight rise in traffic as a result of this here:
https://plus.google.com/communities/104043194426129544738
In my post there, I mentioned that at first glance, I don't really see
what this brings to the table over and above that of just doing a git
pull - but then again, setting up support for gueuefiles might be a
non-trivial matter for some, considering a lack of readily available
tutorial material.
I've actually got an article that is going to be published on a major
Linux news site, as I have almost finished, so will share that soon too
once that occurs.
Finally, I also set the bait suggesting that perhaps one of you would
comment further on sqg and share that wisdom with the 541 active members
of that group... hint, hint ;)
Kindest regards,

Thanks for the heads up - I just posted a reply there. :-) Basically,
the purpose is just to serve as a little helper script to create
queuefiles for a user who may not be using one of the git repos for one
reason or another.

I would welcome any additional input or pointers you or anyone else has

I'm writing on Slackware package management for a prominent Linux news site.

Greetings,
I installed sbopkg on my Slackware 14 machine yesterday.? It is truly a most useful tool.
I've one question about using it to install/build applications.? I've been building programs via the command line, using
% sbopkg -i programName.sqf -k
I've noticed, it takes a while for the process to complete.? Right now, my machine is still working on installing chromium (chrome).? I started this process about 6 hours ago.
Is there some reason why this process takes so long?
Justin

Glad you find it useful. :)
That that particular build just takes forever. Some things build in a
few seconds; some take hours. It's nothing sbopkg causes or can prevent,
though.

Thanks for that pointer;I've just had a look at the site.

I'll be on the lookout for that, as well.

Thanks Chess,
Now here is the interesting bit; I successfully installed 'gnucash
2.4.5' with sbopkg a couple of years ago, I think with Slack 13.37.
I did manage to get the dependency ducks 'in a row' and all was
well.
I'm trying to upgrade to 2.4.11 and my list agrees with yours with
the exceptions that ORBit2 seemed to have dropped off my installed
package list.
I reinstalled that and tried again and got the same
error message about 'gnome-keyring' missing. I rechecked with
2.4.5;it's definitely listed as a dependency there.
I do have a copy of the last page of the 2.4.11 installation
attempt description if it's of any use.

I just built gnucash on a Slackware64 14.0 system using the list of
deps, above, with sbopkg and it built fine.
Are you using a multilib system? Where does the failure occur - meaning
during the build of which package?
