Craig and Bob,

Thanks for your thoughts.  I see that two more spam messages just hit
the list, but hopefully most people's spam filters (Gmail's or
otherwise) will filter those out.  If it gets really, really bad, then
perhaps I'll set the moderation for new members only as a starting point.

I'd imagine that if there's an issue, Google will work it out.
They've been really good about issues like this.

My vote is don't saddle yourself with the need to moderate unless it's
more work to delete the SPAM, because the SPAM will most-likely go
away.  Then again, if you foresee the list as being mostly
announcements, it may not be such a headache.  If were me, I'd just
whine to Google on the Google Groups list.

Folks,

I am getting close to releasing version 0.11.0 of sbopkg.  The main
new feature is now an ability to install a built package when using
the dialog interface.  I have mentioned several times in the past that
this was a feature I was hesitant to include, but after many, _many_
requests for it, I finally caved.  :-)  Currently, this feature is
only available in the dialog interface and not in the cli (although
that will come later).  The way it works is pretty nifty.  If sbopkg
finds a package for a particular piece of software, then a new menu
item will automagically appear in the info menu that allows the user
to install the package.

So, if you have a chance to test the SVN version, please do so and let
me know how it works.

Sbopkg version 0.11.0 has been released.  Many thanks to all the
contributors!  Some of the highlights include:

* After many, _many_ requests, sbopkg now adds preliminary support to
install a package by calling upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new.
Currently, this new feature is only available in the dialog interface
(the cli version will include this feature shortly).  If sbopkg finds
a package for the selected application in the $OUTPUT directory, then
a new menu item will automagically appear allowing the user to install
the package.  Thanks very much to Erik Hanson for the initial code to
get this working.  Please do test this functionality and let me know
if there are any issues.
* Much improved menu navigation -- the 'Return to Main Menu' feature
that appeared in the last release is now moved down as a button next
to "Ok" and "Back."  Additionally, several of "Cancel" buttons are
renamed "Back." I think these changes greatly improve things from a
user interface perspective.  Thanks to Erik Hanson for the
suggestions.
* There is a new option in sbopkg.conf "TERMBUILD" that allows a user
to optionally have the package building process step outside of dialog
and process in a regular terminal.  Thanks to Erik Hanson for the
suggestion and patch to make this work.
* Create a pid file when sbopkg is first run and check for its
existence to prevent multiple instances of sbopkg from running.
Thanks to David Somero for the suggestion.
* Add in several bugfixes for the update list.  Thanks to Erik Hanson
and The-spiki for the bug reports.

Sbopkg version 0.11.2, which is another important bug-fix release to
the 0.11.x series, has been released.  An upgrade is recommended.  The
major fixes include:

* The pid file is now properly removed when using sbopkg from the cli;
many thanks to LukenShiro for the bug report and help with testing.
* Checks for the various sbopkg-related directories and files are improved.
* A couple of updatelist fixes; thanks to LukenShiro for the bug reports.

Again, thanks to everyone for the assistance and contributions.

I've received several emails about the installation feature and when
it will be working from the cli.  I have a rudimentary version working
now, but have not yet committed it to SVN.  I want this 0.11.x series
to settle down a bit and then this new code will come in.  Stay tuned.

Based on what *might* be happening, perhaps make sbopkg try to download
the source with the ?-c? option (resume) to wget, and then if the
checksums still don?t match, remove the source and try again.

Yes, this is a good idea.  As you probably know, you can already clear
out the cache directory of all download files from the main sbopkg
menu, but this blows 'em all away.  I do think it would be helpful to
have the ability to selectively delete certain tarballs in the cache
directory.  This could either be a new standalone entry in the menu
for each application (the menu where you can build or install the
package) or something that appears only when the MD5SUM fails.  The
former might be more helpful as there could be times one would want to
delete the source even if the MD5SUM hasn't failed.

In any event, this is a good suggestion and I'll look at adding in this feature.

Thanks for getting back to me. Here's a little more detail on the
problem I'm having with Open Office. I just tried it again with
version 0.11.2 on another computer:

1) I rsync with Slackbuilds.org and then go to the menu for
OpenOffice.
2) I select "build" and it starts to download the source file.
3) At some point later, I get an error indicating the download went
awry: "

Hmm... I just tried building and installing openoffice.org with
version 0.11.2 of sbopkg and it worked fine.  I also seem to remember
doing this previously with version 0.0.9.   So, I'm not sure why your
build is not working, but it's working here and I have not received
any other bug reports about it.  If your local repo doesn't have a lot
of local modifications, maybe you can remove it and create a new,
clean copy from within sbopkg?

Well, you can certainly set up sbopkg to create and maintain the local
repo in a user's home directory which would then let this user run
sbopkg for rsyncing etc.  All you would need to do is change the
various directories etc. in sbopkg.conf.  This is documented in the
sbopkg.conf(5) man page.

But, as far as running sbopkg as a regular user and then changing to
the root user in order to build and install, that might be more
difficult.  As mentioned in FAQ #11 on the slackbuilds.org site, the
scripts really need to be run as root in order for the owership and
permissions to be set correctly.  And I'm not sure there is an easy
way of changing to the root user within sbopkg short of using sudo,
which I don't really want to require.  Maybe I can add in a feature
where sudo could be optionally set in sbopkg.conf.

In any event, I'll definitely mull this over and see if there is a way
it can be done.

Yes, this can already be done by setting $EDITOR to whatever text
editor you want to use.  This environmental variable could be set in
.bashrc, for example.  This is documented in the sbopkg(8) man page.

Linux.com, and I've got a question and a feature request.

The question:
I tried to build Open Office but ran into a problem. Apparently the
download did not go well, so naturally the MD5 sum failed. No problem,
I tried to download it again, but the MD5 sum failed again, even
through the download seemed to work fine the second time. This was
with version 0.10.0. I haven't tried it with 0.11.2 and probably won't
before the article is due.

In any event, when I downloaded the Slackbuild package and source
manually and built the package "the old fashioned way," everything
worked fine. Could the MD5 information have been corrupted? Can you
think of other reasons why sbopkg had trouble with that particular
package? I have not had any trouble with anything else that I've
built.

Feature requests:
1) It would be nice if more of the work in sbopkg could be done as a
regular user with a prompt for the root password when running the
actual Slackbuild script and the installation. It would also be nice
if the resulting Slackware package had the permissions set for the
user account sbopkg is running from (if it's not the root account). I
manage my source files and Slackware packages as a regular user and
just do the builds and installation as root. It's not essential, but
it would be nice if I could do the same thing with sbopkg.

2) Could sbopkg be set up so that the feature for editing slackbuilds

Thanks, Chess. I thought I could just run it from the svn directory,
but wanted to try making a package anyway. I  ran into a snag with
naming the tar file, and that's what killed the SlackBuild script.

I'll test the svn and get back to you.

Drew, once you check out the SVN using these instructions:

http://code.google.com/p/sbopkg/source/checkout

Then all you really need to do is either navigate into the local SVN
directory that was just created and run the svn sbopkg directly (it's
at /trunk/src/usr/bin/sbopkg) or you could copy that file over to your
/usr/bin, overwriting any other version of sbopkg installed.

Sbopkg is just a shell script, so there is nothing to 'compile'.  The
'tools' directory contains the SlackBuild and other bits that are used
when I create the package, so you could also export the /trunk/src
directory, and build a pakckage.

Ultimately, for testing purposes, I suggest just running
/trunk/src/usr/bin/sbopkg.  That's the easiest.

I'm going to seem really dumb now, but how do I build a package from
the svn checkout?

I'm used to getting compressed source files and letting the slackbuild
script
The files I got for the checkout are already in a directory tree, but
the SlackBuild script untars into a temp directory, and works from
there. I tried making a tarball for the source, but the script hung up
on me in line 27.

Any hints would be appreciated.
