Subject: [sbopkg-discuss] sbopkg 0.0.8 final nearing release

After three release candidates, I think sbopkg version 0.0.8 is almost
ready for release.  The main new feature is the ability to check for
updates to installed SBo packages.  Tonight I committed a few changes
that fix a few errors that I was encountering with this code, but it
is far from perfect.  If you have a chance to pull down the latest SVN
version and test, that would be great.

Thanks again for the emails of encouragement -- I really appreciate it.

Sbopkg version 0.0.8 has been released.  As mentioned previously, the
major addition to this version is the ability to search for and
display potential updates to SBo packages installed on the user's
system.  There are also various other bug-fixes and code cleanups.
I'd like to give a big thanks to Erik Hanson for his suggestions and
help with the new update code.

There is a new noarch package and source tarball available for
download at the project's homepage (as well as a new screenshot
showing the update feature in action -- see the third screenshot):

Thanks for the kind words about sbopkg.  I am very glad that it's
working well for you and helping you build and maintain your SBo
packages!  :-)

And thanks, Robby, for the pointers on setting the Makeflags.
Hopefully, this will help other folks too who may be looking for the
same functionality.

There have been a couple of good bug reports that have come in since
0.0.9, and a few issues have been entered into the sbopkg issue
tracker on the project's home page.  Feel free to check 'em out and
comment if you wish.  I have several updates to make and bug fixes to
commit, which will definitely improve some things.

I'm about to head on vacation for a week with my wife and kids so I
may not get to make any more updates to SVN until I return -- although
I am bringing my Slackware laptop with me, so you never know...

In most cases, allowing access to the pending/ area would not offer
a significant number of new applications - it's mostly just version 
updates
and such usually.  Even so, the answer is an unequivocal NO.  We have
no plans of making that area available to users.  While *you* may very
well be fully capable of understanding the distinction, prior experience
tells me that it's only a matter of time before someone would fail to do
so, and then it would twisted around to reflect badly upon us.

Using sbopkg has made working with SlackBuild.com so easy that it has
made building from source a pleasure rather than the usual grind.

Chess:
I have a quad processor machine, and am looking for an easy way to use
them all for compiling. Rather than have to modify each SlackBuild
script, I was wondering if sbopkg could tell the slackbuild script to
use "make -j5" rather than "make", or is this something that the user
would have to set up locally.

I know that all the slackbuilds are checked before they are allowed on
SlackBuilds.com, but is there any mileage in creating an "unsafe" area
which would be a repository for all other slackbuilds which are out
there. This, when working with sbopkg, would give a vast increase in

JMHO, but I think I would suggest having the user set MAKEFLAGS in the
build environment.

We've not tested it yet with everything, of course (there are some 
questions
as to whether postfix will like it - postfix requires some MAKEFLAGS 
settings
of its own), but for the most part, it's the easiest solution from a 
developer
standpoint...

Thanks for the report.  I can't believe I made those typos in the man
page, especially since I use export TMP= and export OUTPUT= etc in my
own sbopkg.conf file!  :-)  I'll fix those now.

As to your suggestions on setting make, what did you have in mind?

There has been some decent activity since 0.0.8 resulting in some nice
updates and bug fixes.  Here are just some of the changes in sbopkg

* Several bug fixes in the update list to prevent false positives.
Thanks to ktabic and Antoine for the bug reports.
* Fixed some things so that a user can now correctly set a different
$TMP, $SRCDIR, $OUTPUT etc. in sbopkg.conf, which means that someone
can completely segregate sbopkg and it's related SBo-building and
package dumping directories, for example, /sbo/tmp, /sbo/cache,
/sbo/packages etc.  See the sbopkg.conf(5) man page for details.
Thanks to Ken Roberts for the bug report.

in the dialog and cli.

I'm not sure if you need to worry about this functionality for sbopkg
or not. I just ran into an issue with a package on SlackBuilds that
crashes with newer qt4, but the new source corrects it. So, it's an
isolated case and could/should be corrected from SlackBuilds.org since
it's a known bug.

Not at this time without manual intervention.  You can always modify
the SlackBuild and the *.info file to use a newer source version than
is in the SBo repo and then run sbopkg.  Just make sure the download
link and the MD5SUM in the *.info file are correct for the newer
source.  I may add the ability to modify the *.info file to sbopkg in
the same manner that the SlackBuild can be modified currently so this
can all be done within sbopkg, but I have not gotten to that yet.  I
don't think I'll be able to add that to sbopkg version 0.10.0, but
perhaps for the version after that.

First, thanks for sbopkg. It's a great addition to Slackware!

Question. Is there any way to specify a newer package source or place
the newer package source somewhere that sbopkg will recognize or use
it? Rather than sbopkg using the default package source from
SlackBuilds.org.

I'm on vacation this week, but had some time to commit a few bug fixes
and enhancements and apply a patch from Bert Babington that slightly
changes -- for the better, I believe -- how the update code works.  I
have not seen any impact (other than positive) on my systems, but
would appreciate any feedback from folks who can pull down the latest
from SVN and test.  Even feedback that the changes work fine would be
great.

Please feel free to post bug reports here on the list or file a bug
report in the Issue tracker on the sbopkg project home page at
http://code.google.com/p/sbopkg.  Feel free to use the Issue tracker
to post anything like bug reports, enhancement requests, etc since I
can more easily keep track of things that way.

Sbopkg version 0.10.0 has been released.  Once again, thanks to
several great bug reports and patches from users, there has been some
good improvement and enhancements since 0.0.9 that are befitting a new
decimal place release. :-)  Some of the highlights include:

* Committed a patch from that fixes ubuntulooks update bug, removes
$ARCH from the update comparison code to prevent false positive when
different arches are used, and fixes libsigc++ and TiMidity++ update
bugs; thanks to Bert Babington for the patch.
* Modified the sbopkg.conf file to allow easier/more correct exporting
of variables; thanks to Ken Roberts for the patch and helpful dialog
on the issue.  Please note that the default sbopkg $TMP has moved from
/tmp to /tmp/SBo, so be sure to move your permanent build log and
package debugging list, if any, to the new location.
* Renamed sbopkg.conf.sample to sbopkg.conf.new and incorporate a
doinst.sh script per general Slackware convention; thanks to Ken
Roberts for the suggestion, patch, and doinst.sh script.  This
sbopkg.conf.new is the new 'sample' configuration file.  As such,
please back up your old sbopkg.conf and then consider merging any
changes you made to your old sbopkg.conf and then renaming the
sbopkg.conf.new to sbopkg.conf.
* Add a "Return to Main Menu' function in the package information
menu; thanks to Murat D. Kadirov for the suggestion.
* Include fixes for several other packages in the update code.
* Fixed some typos; thanks to samac for the report.
* Add a feature to view the sbopkg README from the main menu.
* Lots and lots of little fixes, tweaks, and cleanups throughout the
script.  The error checking and other similar low-level plumbing
issues are generally improved.
* Several changes/edits to the man pages and other documentation.

This is the second release of sbopkg to include a full ChangeLog of
all the SVN commits so more details can be found in that document.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a bug report, patch, suggestion or
otherwise provided feedback.  As always, please report any bugs to me
via email, the sbopkg mailing list, or, preferably, using the Issue
tracker on the project's website.  I can also be found in #sbopkg,
#slackbuilds, and ##slackware on freenode.
